A SPECIAL TRADITION
On a crisp autumn morning, sleepy-eyed college students step through soft fog to a grove of hundred-year-old trees at the center of their campus. The fates of these trees have always been entwined with the students who pass through their groves, and when architects tried to cut them down in the 60's, the community climbed them, refusing to let them go. On this November day, the students come together to pluck their small, oval fruit - olives. Threading through the branches every year, lifelong friends are made.
FROM A HAVEN OF LEARNING AND GROWTH
These olives are pressed into award-winning oil, described as fruity, buttery, and smooth. Proceeds go back to this haven of learning, growth, and scholarship.
ILLUSTRATION:
Olive trees encircle a central figure. This student wears a cap and gown and climbs a ladder as she reaches towards an olive, a nod to all those who participate in the olive harvest and the contribution its proceeds make towards all students' academic journeys.
COLOR PALLETE:
Three greens analogous to the official Scripps sage green, with bold black.
TYPOGRAPHY:
Goodlife Brush - an authentic, handwritten feel
Alexander Quill - traditional and fairytale-esque.
"Incipit vita oleum", means thus begins olive oil. It's a play on the college's motto - "incipit vita nova". Thus begins new life.
Bronze medalist for Art and Illustration from the 2024 L.A. International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition
INSPIRATIONS
Illuminated manuscripts from the college's Denison Rare Books Library inspired the typography, illustrated frames, and compositions of the billboard and label.
The campus itself - as a Scripps College alum, I will always be in awe of the colors, architecture, and murals of this beautiful place. In particular, the central student figure is reminiscent of "Graffiti Wall" characters.
